Nottinghamshire police community cohesion inspector Gurmit Kaur said: “The festival of Diwali is a time for celebration. We want to keep it that way. On Diwali Day make sure you are doing all you can to protect your jewellery.

“You hold it dear, it’s been in the family for years. Please keep it safe. If you are thinking of going out, take a moment and think about how secure it is.

“We do not want you to stop wearing your jewellery but please try to be discreet in public places, where there are a lot of people around.

“Whether it’s at home or on your person, be aware that while it of great sentimental value to you, it is simply cash value to thieves.

“We have increased patrols during the festival in a bid to deter and disrupt criminals, but you can help us by taking on board our crime prevention advice and remaining vigilant.”

If you do open your windows, make sure they are on a locked latch, and don’t leave anything of value within reach.

If you are planning to be away from home or to travel abroad for any length of time, please make arrangements to leave your jewellery safe, either with friends or family or stored securely away from your home.”

Police have reminded people to help protect their jewellery to photgraph it and upload them to www.immobilise.com so, if they are stolen and recovered them, there is a better chance of getting it back.

Always report suspicious activity around houses to police. If you suspect someone of dealing in stolen jewellery call Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555 111.
