A marathon effort for Dale

MONTHS of gruelling training paid off for Worksop man Dale Varns who completed the London Marathon, raising £4,500 for a children’s charity.

Dale completed the 26.2 mile run in three hours and 37 minutes to raise money for Children with Cancer.

He decided to try his hand at the marathon after losing his father to asbestos-related cancer in 2010 and after watching his brother successfully beat the disease.

Wife Kay said she was ‘incredibly proud’ of her husband’s achievements on the day.

“We couldn’t make it to the end of the course to see him because there was so much congestion, but it was just such a big relief to here he had finished the race,” she said.

“It was the first time he had run a marathon and he trained so hard, finishing with a really great time.”

She added: “It was a really emotional day and he did so well.”

“Our thanks go to all the local businesses and friends and family who supported him so much,” she said.
