A life-changing helmet for Oscar

A BRAVE little boy from Gainsborough is battling against a rare condition - and needs YOUR help so he can receive life-changing treatment.

Oscar Hart is just four-months-old, and has been diagnosed with severe brachycephaly - also known as flat-head syndrome.

The condition means that the back of the head is wider than it is deep. If left untreated then it can lead to problems with eye and jaw alignment and lead to other social problems - such as being bullied in later life.

The treatment for this is not available through the NHS so can only be done privately - with treatment alone costing nearly £2,000.

“We first started to notice that something wasn’t right when she was about five-weeks-old,” said Oscar’s mother Kirsty Hart. “That’s when I started doing my research.”

Last month, The Standard spoke to the family of baby Amelia Goff who also has the condition.

“When I heard about Amelia, I got in touch her mum Elise and she gave me some great advice,” said Kirsty. “I booked a doctor’s appointment at a clinic she recommended and the consultant said that Oscar would need a helmet to correct it.”

She continued: “That’s when I started fundraising.”

Kirsty said that the treatment would make a world of difference to Oscar’s life.

She went on: “His ears are misaligned and some people think that he will just grow into shape but nothing is definite.”

“It could also start effecting his jaw and other parts of his head and could suffer problems with bullying when he’s older.”

Kirsty added: “It’s just nice to know that we’re trying to do all that we possibly can while there’s still chance.”

“I’d just like to say a huge thank you to Elise for being such a star, and to everyone else who has already donated or arranged an event.”

The White Hart pub in Blyton will be holding a special charity raffle to help Oscar on Saturday 24th March. There will also be a fundraiser event at Meynell Kindergarten in Laughton, near Gainsborough on 31st March.
