A-Level success in Retford

Director Rosalynde Grum congratulated students and said they had received the “best results ever”

“Our students have achieved the best results ever with a number gaining A* grades in more than one subject,” she said.

“Middle band students achieved grades in more subjects than ever before. All A-Level students have achieved a qualification.”

Rebecca Daniels was over the moon when she discovered she had gained the grades needed to study natural sciences at the University of Birmingham.

The 17-year-old took her A Levels a year early after skipping a year in secondary school.

“I was going to take a gap year but because of the fees going up I decided against that,” said Rebacca, who gained A grades in chemistry, physics and maths and a C in general studies.

“I’m just in shock. I can’t believe I’ve done this well.”

The only hurdle facing Rebecca, of Victoria Road, Retford, now is financing her time at university. As she is only 17, she has been able to get a student loan but is unable to get an overdraft until she turns 18 in December.

Max Myers was delighted with his 2 A* grades and 2 A grades which gained him a place studying law at Nottingham University.

“I’ve done so much better than I expected,” said the 18-year-old from Walkeringham, who wants to become a lawyer.

“I’ve been up all night and got here as early as I could.”

“It’s just under a month until I go to uni and I’m counting the days, I can’t wait.”

Max’s girlfriend Bethany Bradley, from Forest Hill Park, Worksop was also celebrating.

The 18-year-old gained A* grades in history and business and economics, As in English and general studies and a B in maths.

“I’m really excited. I’m really please because it’s a lot better than I expected,” said Bethany, who will go to the University of Manchester to study international management.

“Going to university is something I’ve definitely always wanted to go to. I always knew I was going to go this year.”

Elaine Rhodes, from Retford is preparing to move to Sheffield to study history after gaining the results she needed.

“I needed three As to get in but I got two A*s and two As, which is much better,” she said.

Chloe Bradley, has got into her dream university of Loughborough after getting an A*, 2 As, a C and a D.

The 18-year-old from Retford, who is a member of Doncaster Athletic Club, will study sport science with management.

“It’s the university I’ve always wanted to go to,” said the 400 metre runner.

“I can carry on running and it has got great training facilities.”

Mrs Grum also spoke about the first group of students from the Post 16 Centre who have now finished their degrees.

These included Rebecca Short, who studied fashion and design at Birmingham, and has recently had one of her outfits worn by Lady Gaga and Sarah Abel who has just graduated with a first in languages from Cambridge.
