A century of happiness!

A PARTY with family and friends was the perfect way to celebrate a 100th birthday milestone for one Harworth woman.

Hilda Goulden enjoyed the celebration at her home, which was topped of by a card from the Queen.

Hilda was born in Balby on 22nd September 2012 to Frederick and Elizabeth Richardson.

An only child, Hilda went to school in Balby before finding work with Nicholson and Fletcher haberdashery as a messenger girl.

But her potential was quickly spotted and Hilda was trained up to work as a miliner.

She remained in the same position until she married John Goulden in 1936.

The couple had two children, Christine who was born in 1942 but who sadly passed away in July 2012 and John, who was born in 1949.

During their married life Hilda’s husband worked as a school caretaker. Hilda worked as a dinner lady and cleaner in Bentley Tollbar school, before moving to Bentley High Street School.

The couple ended up at Snaith secondary school where they stayed until they both retired in 1977 to a small bungalow in East Cowick.

In 1983 Hilda and John moved into the flat above their son’s bakery in Harworth, where Hilda busied herself making eccles cakes, florentines, apple pies, trifles and pasties until she was 86-years-old and the bakery was sold.

She then moved into her present flat in Harworth.

Daughter-in-law Catherine Goulden said: “Hilda has made many friends along her long journey of life and is a very pleasant and likeable person.”
