Yvonne Gregory admitted assaulting the elderly woman in the communal area of the complex, where she too was a resident, on Monday, January 11.

Lee Shepherd, prosecuting, said: “Miss Gregory came in calling the victim names and shouting and swearing.

“She pushed the woman and caused her to fall over.

“When she got back up, Miss Gregory slapped her on the left side of the face before she was escorted away by a member of staff.”

The court heard the argument began the day before when Gregory gave her victim a Christmas card which was torn in half.

“The victim said - ‘If you can’t send me a full card then don’t send me one at all,’” said Mr Shepherd.

The court heard Gregory had one conviction for being drunk and disorderly in 2000 and three convictions for assaulting police officers in 2012 and 2013.

Zahra Hussain, mitigating, said Gregory, 54, had suffered from mental health problems in recent years but was not in touch with any services that might help her.

The court heard she had been asked to leave the sheltered housing complex and was now living at her partner’s home on Chadburn Road in Mansfield.

Magistrates said the assault was aggravated by the age of the elderly and vulnerable victim and the fact it took place in a caring environment.

She was bailed until March 16 for a mental health assessment to be carried out, and ordered to stay away from the complex and not to contact the victim.
