Buy why is this happening? Well, according to figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), 7.64bn plastic bags were handed out to customers in supermarkets in 2014 in England, an increase of more than 200million compared to 2013.

The idea behind the charge is to stop people using unlimited bags and re-use old ones.

England is the last country in the UK to apply the charges, with Wales the first to do it in 2011, Scotland in 2013 and Northern Ireland in 2014.

Critics have said that it just another ‘money-making’ scheme, whilst others claim that the answer is simple; Bring your own bags.
