Win! Tickets to see Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Worksop will be taken back in time and across the pond next week and YOU will get the chance to go along for the ride.

The Dukeries Theatre Group will be showcasing their version of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tennessee Williams at the Acorn Theatre from Thursday 15th to Saturday 17th November.

It tells the story of Brick and Maggie, a couple who are struggling to keep their marriage on track.

The action takes place on one evening on Brick’s family estate in Mississippi, where everyone is eagerly celebrating the birthday of Big Daddy Pollitt - who has come home from the clinic with a clean bill of health.

However, the rest of the family know the awful truth.

The play was first performed on 24th March 1955, and spawned a famous MGM film adaptation three years later, starring Paul Newman as Brick, Elizabeth Taylor as Maggie and Burl Ives as Big Daddy Pollitt.

A Dukeries spokesman said: “Many readers will be familiar with the film but what is not generally understood is that Tennessee Williams wrote a number of variations for the stage.”

“Typically the film version introduced an upbeat note of reconciliation between Big Daddy and his son Brick which does not figure in the play. So even if you think you know what this story is all about, you may be surprised.”

Over the years, the Dukeries Theatre Group, who have been on the go since 1947, have performed many different comedies and farces designed to make everyone laugh, along with ventures into musicals and children’s theatre.

However, this performance could not be more different.

After the success of their award-winning production of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, the audience will be taken on another journey of discovery, witnessing different feelings such as love, guilt, corruption and greed.

If you would like to see this extraordinary play brought to life, performances will start at 7.30pm on all three dates.

Tickets are £6 and can be purchased from the Acorn Theatre box office off Queen Street, or by calling 01909 501817.
