Tate art lecturer’s talk

ART-LOVERS enjoyed yet another colourful talk at the Gainsborough and District Fine Arts Society.

Art lecturer at Tate Modern and Tate Britain, Linda Smith gave a well received talk on the representation of the working classes and the changing attitudes of society towards such a disparate group through centuries of art.

The working class struggle for political acceptance arrived through the 18th Century with Revolution across Europe when finally gypsies, tramps, thieves and the poor were depicted as main subject matter in the pictures of artists such as Breughel, Titian, Hogarth and Gainsborough.
