This community choir recently played a key role at Worksop’s Priory Church in the Royal British Legion’s very moving commemoration of the start of the Battle of the Somme - and received plaudits from the organisers and the audience for their performance.

The mood changes, though, for a summer concert that promises to be a more lively, upbeat affair.

The Singers always like to provide the audience with something different each summer.

This year, they are presenting a mix of world folk music and classic pop.

Alongside the music of David Bowie, Billy Joel and Abba, there will be pieces of folk music from around the world, including pieces from close to home such as All Around My Hat and All Through the Night.

Greg Watson, the choir’s musical director, said: “One of the things about this choir is that they don’t do what might be called standard choir fare.

“They are willing to try to do something different.

“It’s not always easy, but when a piece finally comes together, it can be brilliant.”

This willingness to try different styles of music means the choir has developed a wide ranging repertoire that stretches from the 16th Century piece Greensleeves to the late, great David Bowie’s Space Oddity, via Gershwin, Lloyd Webber, the Beatles, ELO and Abba in between.

Greg continued: “The choir has developed a sound all of its own.

“Their dedication, enthusiasm, and sense of fun make it a pleasure both to listen to and to be It has been developing a growing following among the people of Worksop as a result both of its singing and its sense of fun.

Their Worksop summer concert is on Wednesday, August 17 at The Crossing in the town at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £6 and from The Crossing on 01909 473375 or in person at the church.
