Local lads Ziyos set to rock with unique style

LOCAL metal rockers Ziyos have been carving quite a name out for themselves - and now they’re set to go far in a national competition.

Ziyos are five lads from in and around Worksop who all have their sights set on reaching the top.

The band are based at The Frog and Nightgown pub in Worksop and have been working up quite a strong following around the town and nationwide.

Bassist Rob ‘Tini’ Patterson, 27, from Blyth said that the band were quite a tight musical unit.

“We’ve all been friends for a while and have known each other through the Frog and Nightgown for years,” he said.

“We formed the band through chance really and everything fell into place.”

Describing the band’s sound, Rob said: “People always say that we’re quite hard to pigeonhole.”

“We’re influenced by 1980s thrash metal but throw in a lot of melody and hard rock too. It takes on a life of its own from there really.”

Rob also says that the Worksop music scene is very much alive and healthy.

“A lot of the local scene seems to be centered around the Frog and Nightgown and Worksop bands are doing quite well,” he said.

“You need to play quite a few times but once people know your name then you build up quite a good following.”

The band have also landed a place in the semi-finals of the Metal to the Masses competition - with a grand prize that includes playing at rock festival Bloodstock.

“To play a festival like that would just be massive for us, said 21-year-old drummer Matt Gray from Langold.

“If we can get up to that level then we would be on our way up and that would be such a huge accomplishment for us.”

He continued: “We’ve got quite a few fans in Worksop and Sheffield and we’ve played at The Corporation in Sheffield quite a lot.”

“We just want to be able to hit the road as much as possible.”

Matt added: “I’m not too bothered about the money - I just love music and gigging, so to be able to do this all the time would be a dream come true.”

Ziyos play The Grand Central in Manchester on Tuesday 29th May in the semi-finals of the Metal to the Masses competition.

They are also set to play The Frog and Nightgown in Worksop on 9th June. For more information on the band or to listen to Ziyos head to www.ziyos.co.uk or www.myspace.com/ziyos.
