It was all part of the furniture

THE VICTORIAN and Edwardian professional classes loved to clutter up their rooms with furniture and ornaments often from various parts of the Empire. It must have been a way of showing others just how well off they were.

When people at the posh end of Carlton Road were living like this, those experiencing hard times in the poorer parts of Worksop were sometimes forced to use their doors, windows and floorboards for firewood to keep warm.

It does make you wonder how they managed to keep warm if they were removing the windows and what they did once the fire and burnt out.
