Haygarth House, in the village of Babworth on the outskirts of Retford in Nottinghamshire, was the former rectory to the neighbouring All Saints Church and was once the home of Reverend Richard Clyfton, who founded the movement that led to the Mayflower Pilgrims sailing to America 400 years ago.
The site was previously a successful racing yard, stud farm and conference centre. Savills, the firm handling the sale, says the property could be converted into a boutique hotel or wedding venue, as it offers direct access to the church via a private walkway through its own woodland.
The gardens surrounding the house were originally laid by Humphry Repton, who produced designs for other grand residences such as Harewood House near Leeds and Longleat in Wiltshire.
Rupert Fisher, head of residential sales at Savills in Lincoln, said: “Haygarth House offers an exciting opportunity either as an amazing private estate with incredible equestrian facilities or, subject to planning permission being obtained, a stunning boutique hotel and wedding venue especially with such an attractive church on the edge of the estate.
“Set within about 7.85 acres, this plot also benefits from being located in a sought-after village location that has excellent schools and transport links.”
