Going to pictures in Worksop

LAST week’s picture of men at Shireoaks Colliery in July 1958 prompted a phone call from Bernie Ayton, of Shireoaks Local History Group.

The photo had been submitted by Karen Ashmore, of Carlton, whose late dad Derek Stafford was pictured with some of his workmates.

Mr Stafford died after an accident at the pit on 24th July 1969, the night before he was due to go on holiday with his wife and two children.

Mrs Ayton got in touch to say she has a video from the mid-1950s of men working in the foundry at Shireoaks Colliery, including Mr Stafford, Reg Beardmore and Eric Hargreaves.

She said: “I have lots of general photos of Shireoaks, and of the colliery which people can ask to see.”

“I also have all the parish registers for anyone tracing their family history in Shireoaks.”

Anyone wanting to view the photos or find out more information can contact Mrs Ayton on 483443.

This week’s photo shows the former Gaiety Picturedrome on Bridge Street in Worksop.

It was built in 1875 as the Criterion Hall and converted into a theatre in 1908.

In 1911 the premises became known as the Gaiety Theatre Picturedrome and it continued to show films until July 1962.
