The Junction: Cute twist on classic lunch satisfied my taste

You might think that there isn’t too much you can do to make a plate of fish and chips look anything other than, well, a bit on the ordinary side.

But a visit to Sutton’s The Junction will show you just how wrong you could be.

It was on a lunchtime trip to the bar and restaurant that I decided I fancied the traditional dish, after hearing more than one of the other customers ordering the same.

Fearing ‘food envy’ if I went for something that wouldn’t hit the same spot, I ordered at the bar, at the same time choosing a starter of sesame chicken goujons to share with my friend, and a cajun chicken burger with chips for her main course.

The starter was brought out quickly and consisted of three fairly large pieces of breaded chicken, sprinkled with sesame seeds and served with a lettuce leaf and red onion garnish and a pot of sweet chili dip.

The chicken was moist and flavoursome and the dip made your tongue tingle a tad - it was a good start to lunch.

But it was when the friendly waitress brought out the mains shortly afterwards that I was most impressed.

My fish and chips was served in the cutest and quirkiest way - the perfectly-cooked chips were in a mini metal deep-fat fryer basket, lined with greaseproof paper printed with ‘newsprint’, with the meaty and succulent fish covered in crispy and golden batter leant up against it.

It was accompanied by a pot of minted mushy peas and tartare sauce and really was a good meal, excellently presented.

My friend’s cajun chicken burger was tasty, though the cajun seasoning was not as strong as it perhaps could have been. The caramelised red onions in the bun were a nice touch.

At just over £20 with two soft drinks, this was a great value lunch at a lovely venue.
