Couple’s return to The Savoy

HAPPY memories were relived for one local couple as The Guardian and Savoy Cinema treated them to a film where they first met over 60 years ago.

Last week, The Guardian met Sylvia and Aubrey Sutton from Dinnington, who were celebrating their Diamond wedding anniversary.

The happy couple first met at the old Savoy Cinema in Worksop over 60 years ago, so we teamed up with the new Savoy for them to have a free visit to the pictures with a nice big carton of popcorn - to take them down memory lane.

Mr and Mrs Sutton, who lived in Worksop for many years, chose to watch The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, starring Bill Nighy and Judi Dench - in a cinema seat built for two.

“We had such a nice time,” said Aubrey, 83. “It was very strange but it brought back a lot of memories.”

“We really enjoyed the film, but it was a bit loud in comparison to what it used to be like! There was a lot of booming and banging but that’s just how it is today.”

He added: “All in all, it was another lovely surprise and really livened things up for us!”

Sylvia, 79, went on: “We haven’t been to the pictures for years so this really took us back.”

“It was really different to how it used to be but we really enjoyed ourselves.”
