The run-down of models once owned by famous footballers has been put together by Auto Trader and ranges from a classy standard Ferrari to a selection of “unique” super SUVs guilty of some serious personalisation own goals.
One of the definitive poster cars of the 1990s, the 512 TR ticks all the classic Ferrari boxes with its sleek design, rear-mounted flat-12 and open-gate manual gearbox. This example, first owned by former player and manager Mark Hateley, finishes that list off with the famous Rosso Corsa paintwork, cream leather interior and a full service history. At £174,900 it’s also got the Ferrari price tag to match.
If you don’t have Ferrari money but still fancy an eye-catching two-door sports coupe once owned by a famous footballer then how about Vincent Kompany’s old Ford Mustang? Yours for just £44,000. The limited edition Shelby GT California is one of just 215 examples made, the 2008 model features a supercharged 4.6-litre V8, short-throw five-speed manual transmission and a host of chassis upgrades to keep the 300bhp in check. A tribute to the 1968 Mustang California special, this bright orange machine with enhanced bodykit, bonnet scoop and racing stripes isn’t one for shrinking violets.
Looking at the state of this £110,000 G-Class it’s no surprise that the famous former owner wants to keep their name a secret. Among the “enhancements” made by its previous premier league owner are a Onyx G7 wide arch conversion, including a massive extending front bumper, roof spoiler and door mouldings, 22-inch black alloys, a suspension lowering kit and a black body wrap. Passengers enjoy quilted leather, plenty of carbon trim, headrest-mounted DVD system and the optional winter pack - handy at this time of year. Under all the plastic crud lies the utterly ridiculous AMG G63 with a 5.5-litre V8 with 563bhp capable of hitting 62mpg in just 5.4 seconds. So at least you won’t have to hang around to listen to people laughing at you.
The same dealership is selling a second super SUV once owned by the same mystery player and you’ll spot a theme here. Once again it’s all black and adorned with an Onyx body kit that takes an already ugly car and makes matters worse. Alongside the swollen, vented bonnet are extended door mouldings, massive 24-inch wheels and a spoiler that looks like a shopping trolley handle. Inside, things are more subtle but the exterior’s none-more-black theme is carried on to the Beluga leather upholstery and piano black veneer. Under the ridiculous bonnet is a 429bhp diesel V8 capable of getting the Bentayga to 62mph in less than five seconds. A snip at £124,995.
Thankfully not every Bentley owner feels the need to customise their car. This Continental GTC was once owned by England manager Gareth Southgate looks all the better for remaining largely unchanged. The current private owner has added a piano black veneer and a full ceramic coating but the drop-top grand tourer with Mulliner driving pack is notably restrained compared with some of the other cars on this list. Rather than full-on W12 6.0-litre, this example features the 4.0-litre V8 favoured by many buyers but with 521bhp and a sub-five-second 0-62mph time, it’s no slouch. With 41,000 miles on the clock, the owner is asking just under £78,000.
We’re back to questionably modified SUVs with this £100k Range Rover Sport once owned by England goalkeeper Jack Butland. According to the advert this is (thankfully) the only current-generation SVR to have received the Project Khan treatment. That means a huge list of body additions ranging from a three-piece spoiler to new arches, grille and bumpers, plus 23-inch wheels. Inside, the sports seats and other interior panels have been reupholstered in hexagonal quilted and perforated leather and there are drilled aluminium pedals to complete the sporty look.
