So when a new Indian restaurant opened its doors in Bassetlaw, I was quick to put my name forward to sample its delights.

I had been the restaurant in Barnby Moor before when it was an Italian and I hoped that our meal at Yash was just as delicious as our last visit. And thankfully I wasn’t disappointed.

Nestled behind the White Horse Inn, it’s not easily visible from the road, but it is well finding.

Walking into the restaurant on a cold Friday evening, I was instantly struck by the bright and modern decor. The tables were spaciously spread out, so you didn’t feel like the table next to you is almost on your lap. There is also a conservatory area at one end of the dining area, which allows lots of natural light in which adds to the bright interior.

My partner and I were greeted by a friendly waiter who showed us to our table near a window.

We couldn’t wait to get stuck into the food. We’d both had salads all week, so decided that several courses were definitely in order - it was Friday night afterall!

The menu was full of the old favourites that you’d expect in any decent Indian restaurant including korma, bhuna and madras, all available with either vegetables, chicken, lamb or king prawns.

The list of other dishes was impressive and includes a variety of specials, tandoori dishes, balti dishes, biryani dishes and dishes suitable for vegetarians.

Those who like heat can do no wrong than order one of the curries under the hot and spicy heading.

My partner and I decided to go all out.

We ordered two poppdoms and pickle tray which we quickly brought to our table. The poppodoms were perfectly cooked and the four dish pickle tray was delicious.

We couldn’t decide which dish to have to start, so both opted for the Yash selection , a mix of chicken tikka, sheek kebab and lamb tikka.

We decided to order one each and go against our normal routine of ordering one to share, because the portions are often not big enough. The same cannot be said at Yash. We were greeted with an impressive array of delights. A huge sheek kebab and four pieces of chicken and lamb, along with a side salad. The meat was tender and cooked to perfection and the tikka spice was just the right amount of heat.

We cleared our plates, but despite it being delicious, we regretted ordering two because we both had little room for our main courses.

After a short break they arrived at our table.

My partner had ordered his usual of chicken korma and chips, although was tempted to order something different which is testament to Yash’s varied menu.

I’d opted for the chicken tikka masala with pilau rice, and a plain naan bread to share.

The portions were generous but not overpowering, with enough for two good servings each.

We both commented on how creamy the sauces were. A plus for my partner and his korma, but I would have preferred a little more spice in my tikka masala.

The pilau rice was bursting with flavour and some of the best I’d ever tasted, while the naan bread was crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle.

The service was brilliant with waiters attentive but not overpowering.

Yash served up one of the best Indian meals we’d had in a long time and is on our list for a second visit.
