The distribution centre is a ‘major employer’ in the district, where the infection rate currently stands at 116- more than double the national average.

And from Sunday, March 7, free Covid-19 tests have been made available to more than 2,000 staff over the next 10 days.

The at home tests are voluntary but the firm has said by giving people the chance to test themselves, it will help stop the spread of the virus.

A spokesperson for Wilko said: "Throughout the pandemic the health and safety of all our team members has remained our number one priority.

"We’re a major employer in the region and have been continuously working with the local authorities and Public Health England on ways to keep team members and their families safe, including encouraging more regular testing.

"For everyone’s peace of mind, from Sunday, March 7, we’ve introduced access to free Covid-19 ‘at home’ testing kits for everyone at our distribution centre.

"Available for 10 days, the tests are totally voluntary and easy to do. We believe that by giving everyone the chance to get tested, we’ll be able to see if any of our team members have the virus without the symptoms, helping us all to stop the spread.

"As this is group testing, team members can continue to work as normal. Anyone that tests positive will need to follow the Government’s instructions and isolate for ten days on full Company Sick Pay."
