Mum thanks Bassetlaw midwives for ‘fantastic’ care during traumatic birth

Kim Webster told how in February while having a routine cesarean section during her son Corey’s birth ‘things went drastically wrong’ and she started losing blood.

Panicking mum Kim was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU) after baby boy Corey was resuscitated as soon as he was delivered.

As the hospital started making preparations for the coming Covid-19 pandemic Kim, 37, spent five days on a ward under consultant care.

Newborn Corey - thankfully born a healthy 9lb 7oz - remained in hospital with dad James apart from a short visit while Kim was cared for in ICU.

However she has described how the maternity team at the hospital provided ‘amazing support’ to her and partner James.

A midwife and student midwife provided Kim with regular updates about how her partner James and son Corey were doing as she recovered.

However when contact centre manager Kim returned home her midwife gave vital help - checking in on her regularly while partner James was away for work training.

Kim, whose six-year-old son Dexter was also born by C-section, said: “It was a really difficult situation during Corey’s birth but I was supported incredibly well.

“And when I was allowed home they stayed in touch making sure I was alright - it’s such an important service to have at your local hospital.

“As the world was entering lockdown everything was overwhelming for myself and James.

“With the care of the midwifery team James, Corey and I felt cared for and safe - it’s their hard work and care that supported us through a very difficult time.”

As a thanks Kim and James are taking part in a 12km obstacle race called Nuclear Rush in October raising money for Bassetlaw Hospital.

She said: “We’ve not done a lot of exercise for a while so we thought we would have a bit of fun but raise awareness.

“Lots of charities are struggling during the pandemic but we wanted to give something back for what the midwife service does.”
