This means that even if areas are not moved down into lower tiers in the December 16 review, they may still have a chance to be moved down a week later on December 23.

That is a week earlier than previously promised by the Government, which initially committed to a review every 14 days.

In today’s call with MPs (December 14) Health Secretary Matt Hancock also confirmed that the whole London area would be moved into Tier 3 lockdown restrictions as cases of COVID-19 in the capital surge ahead of Christmas.

There has been no confirmation of any areas moving down a tier at the moment.

Nottinghamshire is currently under Tier 3 restrictions is in the highest lockdown restrictions, which means pubs and restaurants are only allowed to operate as a takeaway and household mixing is banned.

The Government is due to review the tier system on December 16, with any changes into tiers for any area set to be announced before being put in place from Saturday, December 19.

The next review after that is now expected to take place on December 23 – the day the ‘grace period’ allowing three ‘bubbles’ to meet for Christmas begins.

Once that period has ended, people will need to follow the rules imposed by whichever tier restrictions their area is placed under as of the December 23 review.
