Gladys Mujajati was only 46, and lived in Littleover, Derby.

A Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson said: “It is with deep sadness that we confirm the loss of a much-loved community mental health nurse, who worked to support local people through the Derby City Community Mental Health Team.

“She had an underlying health condition and had stepped away from frontline duties in recent weeks. We are aware that Gladys contracted COVID-19 before she sadly died in hospital earlier this week.”

Ifti Majid, Chief Executive of Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said: “Gladys was a much loved member of the Derby City Community Mental Health Team and we are all devastated by her loss.

“Gladys had a big heart and colleagues have talked about how she always had a smile on her face. She was known to be a warm and caring individual, always looking out for her patients and colleagues, showing true compassion and empathy.

“It is clear that in Gladys we have lost a fantastic nurse, colleague and friend.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Gladys’ family, friends and colleagues.”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock this morning told BBC Breakfast there had "very sadly" been 27 verified deaths amongst NHS staff with coronavirus.

The real total is known to be higher than 28 - but official figures lag slightly behind.

Mr Hancock said every death of NHS staff was being investigated to find out "what we can do better" to protect those on the front line.
