The city’s infection rate jumped from 20.6 per 100,000 of the population in the week ending 21 June to 24.4 in the week ending 28 June. The data includes testing in all settings.

That meant Sheffield had the eighth highest infection rate in England at the end of this period. Public Health England data updated on Monday, 6 July showed the city’s infection rate is still among the top 10 areas in the country.

Leicester, which has been placed back into lockdown, had the highest infection rate as of 28 June at 141.3. Elsewhere in South Yorkshire, Barnsley’s infection rate remained the third highest in England as of 28 June, despite dropping to 35.1 from 54.7 the previous week. The infection rate also dropped in Rotherham from 33.6 in the week ending 21 June to 26.1 the following week.

Doncaster’s infection rate rose from 17.4 to 21.3 across this period to become the tenth highest in England. In neighbouring Derbyshire, the infection rate dropped from 9.7 to 6.5, while in Nottinghamshire it fell from 12.6 to 5.4.

Speaking last week, Sheffield’s director of Public Health Greg Fell said: “We have good outbreak control management in Sheffield and the council’s Public Health team continue to work closely with Public Health England to manage the safe reopening of the city with appropriate safety measures in place to control any future infections.”
