Mr Clarke spoke on the subject in new ‘virtual’ House of Commons during questions to housing, communities and local government secretary Robert Jenrick.

Mr Clarke-Smith said: “In my constituency, we have been fortunate to benefit from the excellent work of the voluntary sector and groups such as Bassetlaw Community and Voluntary Service and Bassetlaw Action Centre.

“Will he join me in recognising the valuable contribution of such groups in supporting local authorities in the fight against covid-19?”

Mr Jenrick, MP for Newark, replied: “In addition to my honourable friend, it is my privilege to represent part of the Bassetlaw district, so I am more than happy to join him in thanking those wonderful organisations, which I also know well and which are doing a great job in supporting local communities.”

Lynn Tupling, chief executive of Bassetlaw Action Centre, commented: “Effectively, business as usual stopped in March for our organisation, and staff and volunteers pulled together to provide new services, which include a shopping service for vulnerable and older people.

“We also launched our weekly ‘safe and well’ phone calls to minimise the impact of social isolation on this group.

“We continue to offer telephone-based housing, benefits, stroke and neurological support as well as promoting the importance of keeping active.

Mr Clarke-Smith has started an online campaign called ‘Best of Bassetlaw’, encouraging his constituents to nominate their friends and neighbours who are making a difference.

“He said: “So far I’ve been overwhelmed by entries, from cupcake donations to shopkeepers who go the extra mile, to community and support groups who have gone digital, so they can continue to help people.

“It just goes to show what a tight-knit, caring community we have here in Bassetlaw.

“Organisations, businesses and individuals are showing exceptional commitment to helping people who are struggling in these times.”
