Bassetlaw cemeteries to close and tighter restrictions for funerals during coronavirus lockdown

Bassetlaw residents will be unable to tend the graves of loved ones during the coronavirus lockdown after the decision was made to close cemeteries in the district.

Bassetlaw District Council said cemereries at Hannah Park, Manton in Worksop along with Retford Cemetery would close as part of widespread national restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

A spokesperson said: “We understand this may be upsetting for some people and appreciate your understanding during this difficult time.

“This follows a directive from the Local Government Association and associated Health Protection Regulations 2020 which came in to force on the 26 March and apply to any person who is responsible for a crematorium or burial ground including local authorities and private providers.”

The Government has also issued updated advice for families who have lost a loved one at this time.

This includes a restriction on the number of mourners to a maximum of 12 people, while maintaining a safe distance.
