Rother Valley MP encourages career starters to apply for National Grid green jobs programme

Alexander Stafford MP. a member of parliamentary bodies on business, energy and industrial strategy, is encouraging people to consider graduate, student placement and apprenticeship schemes run by National Grid.

The company, which owns England’s electricity and gas transmission networks, is currently recruiting for roles including a new gas transmission degree apprenticeship where employees will study for a Bachelor of Engineering qualification as part of their role.

Mr Stafford said: “In applying for one of these programmes, young people will have the opportunity to shape the future of energy in the UK at a critical time in the UK’s path to tackling climate change.

“Many of the new joiners will hone their skills at a one-of-a-kind, world-class training centre in Eakring, Nottinghamshire, offering an unrivalled development experience and I would encourage anyone looking for their next step in work to apply for this fantastic opportunity.”

A report published by National Grid earlier this year revealed that the UK energy sector needs to recruit for 400,000 skilled jobs right across the country between now and 2050 if the UK is to meet its ‘net zero’ climate emissions target.

Many of those jobs are expected to be in former industrial heritage areas, such as Rother Valley and north Nottinghamshire, with the potential to stimulate local economies.

The deadline to apply for the graduates and undergraduate programmes is January 31, while anyone interested in apprenticeships has until March 14.

Moryse McInnis, who is currently on the National Grid graduate programme, said: “I’ve been on the scheme for just over a year and have learnt a lot.

“I’m really excited to be playing my part in the transition of the energy sector to help tackle climate change and I’d encourage anyone interested in the energy sector to apply.”
