Bassetlaw District Council’s planning committee heard 90 percent of residents spoke against the plans - which were previously refused by members - in a questionnaire.

Concerns were also raised that the development is located on one of the last green areas on Shireoaks Common and the new estate would effectively join Shireoaks village with Worksop.

Planning committee members also pointed out that Shireoaks neighbourhood plan had been given ‘limited weight’ and asked why Shireoaks had been included in the Worksop housing allocation.

However planning officers pointed out that the Shireoaks neighbourhood plan did not contain any policies or allocations to meet the housing requirements so a decision was made in favour of sustainable development.

They added that Shireoaks was included in the Worksop housing allocation because it was classed as a part of the town.

Builder Stancliffe Homes Ltd plan to build seven four-bedroom houses, 10 three-bedroom houses and 10 three-bedroom bungalows.

A new access road will be built as a T-junction including a right-hand turn lane onto the site - on greenfield land South Of Woodend Farm.

Speaking out in support of the plans Steve Jones, of Stancliffe Homes, said members of the community had been consulted and registered no objections.

He added that local service providers had also been consulted and could ‘accommodate an increased demand’.

He pointed out that the majority of 46 people hired on the nearby Oaktree Park development were from Shireoaks and Worksop - with ‘continued employment opportunities going forward’.
