Gainsborough: Meera Syal heads the cast for Behind The Beautiful Flowers

Star of The Kumars and Goodness Gracious Me, Meera Syal heads the cast for Behind The Beautiful Flowers being shown at Gainsborough Trinity Arts Centre as part of National Theatre Live.

India is surging with global ambition.

But beyond the luxury hotels surrounding Mumbai airport lies a makeshift slum, full of people with plans of their own.

Zehrunisa and her son Abdul aim to recycle enough rubbish to fund a proper house.

Sunil, aged 12 and stunted, wants to eat until he’s as tall as Kalu the thief.

Asha seeks to steal Government anti-poverty funds to turn herself into a ‘first-class person’, while her daughter Manju intends to become the slum’s first female graduate.

But their schemes are fragile and global recession threatens the garbage trade.

And another slum-dweller is about to make an accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the neighbourhood.

Adapted by David Hare from Katherine Boo’s Pulitzer Prize winning book, Behind The Beautiful Flowers is on next Thursday (12th March) at 7pm.

Tickets priced £12 and £10 are available now from the box office on 01427 676655 or online at www.microsites.lincolnshire.gov.uk/tac
