Drama tells of town’s people and river Trent

Their performance Write On The River culminated after several months working with Riverside Writers. The writers created an original piece of drama about the people of the town and its river.

Funded by the Trent Vale Partnership they were able to attend workshops by professional playwright Kevin Fegan to help develop their writing.

The Writers then turned to Kismet Theatre Company to ask if they could produce a rehearsed reading of the piece - a series of monologues spanning over 1,000 years of local history.

Kismet then spent several weeks creating their own interpretation of these remarkable tales.

The free premiere was then performed at Lea Village Hall. Trent Vale Festival’s remit is to make events accessible to all.

More than 60 people came to watch the production, performed traverse style - with two sides of the audience facing each other - to echo the banks of the Trent.

Highlights included several physical interpretations of the river, who became a living person narration.

It is a gripping tale of a London prostitute forced to commit murder to save her own neck, and a cleverly staged football match between the captain of Gainsborough Trinity and an elephant.

“The Riverside Writers and Trent Vale Festival organiser Hester Kappur were delighted with the results,” said Kerry Greenwood from Kismet.

“We hope to collaborate again in the future.”
