Dazzling start to international concert season at Sheffield City Hall

The Sheffield Internat-ional Concert Season got off to a rousing start with a sparkling rendition of Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmilla Overture.

The Halle Orchestra and their music director Sir Mark Elder were then joined by internationally acclaimed Leeds Piano Competition winner (2006) Sunwook Kim for Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

From the simple opening melody through some of the most technically demanding music of the piano repertoire Sunwook Kim’s virtuosic playing and rapport with the orchestra and conductor was spellbinding.

The all-Russian programme was completed by a spirited performance of Rachmaninov’s Third Symphony, with some beautiful lyrical solos and wonderful lightness and precision,

There is another chance to hear Sunwook Kim with the Halle at Sheffield City Hall on April 2 2016 when he will give a rare double-bill performance of both Brahms’ piano concertos.
