Sir Charles Jasper, an eccentric who delves into the occult, is due to inherit £2 million on his birthday and plans to celebrate with a party on the stage of the St. James’ Theatre.

This theatre is supposedly haunted because of several mysterious deaths many years ago. If Sir Charles should die before the clock strikes eleven, his nephew, Maurice Mullins, will inherit his fortune.
