WORKSOP soldiers are out fighting on the front line, and we are calling on you to show them your support
The Guardian wants you to get behind our brave lasses and lads who are currently serving in Afghanistan.
Flags will be raised outside Worksop Town Hall and Retford Market Place on Monday to mark the lead up to national Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27th June.
Mum Sue Morrin, of St Anne's estate in Worksop, said goodbye to her son Martin for six months when he was sent out to Afghanistan two weeks ago.
"The troops love the support. Martin likes hearing from people. His friends and family send him parcels with useful things in, but also things to make him laugh as well," she said.
"This is the first time Martin, who belongs to 2RTR, has been sent to Afghanistan where he will stay until Christmas."
"He has been out to Iraq before so I am getting used to it. You always worry. Sometimes I won't hear from him for weeks. You listen to the news and hope that nothing is said."
On Sunday, Bassetlaw MP John Mann helped bring together veterans from our area who have served in past conflicts.
Barry Parker, from Worksop, served in the army for 22 years, finishing up serving for the Royal Logistic Core as a warrant officer.
"It is so important to remember what people do sacrifice," he said.
"When you sign up you do so with the knowledge that you may be killed during your service. For the money that the boys and girls serve for it's a big sacrifice to pay."
"It's essential that these services do happen, and knowing that you have got the support back home makes it all worthwhile."
"There's nothing worse than being somewhere outside your own country and returning back to hostilities after you have spent months fighting elsewhere."
Following the Support The Troops shoebox campaign, treats and goodies are getting ready to be shipped out to Afghanistan.
Messages already on the special section on our website include "God bless the troops in the forces giving it everything for the country. More power to you."
Another reader has said: "Thinking of you all out there, keep your heads down and your chins up.
