Lee Westwood teed off at the ISPS Handa Wales Open this morning, as he warms up for next week’s Ryder Cup.
The 41-year-old Worksop man is playing alongside Jamie Donaldson and Paul Casey at Celtic Manor in south Wales, having started the event from the 11th hole at 8.15am.
Westwood will form part of the European team to face America at Gleneagles in Scotland next week, having earned one of captain Paul McGinley’s wildcard selections.
But he’s not overlooking this weekend’s European Tour event in Wales.
He said: “I can’t remember the last time I was as excited as I am now about playing in a regular Tour event.”
“The ISPS Handa Wales Open had always been in the back of my mind as long as I made the team and now that I have, that’s where I’ll be.”
“It’s going to be a great week and perfect preparation.”
Westwood’s fellow Worksop Golf Club product Mark Foster teed off at Celtic Manor an hour later, with playing partners Phillip Archer and Nick Dougherty.
