Worksop table tennis professional Sam Walker helped England to start their European Team Championships campaign in the perfect manner.

The teenager and his compatriots won all three of their matches on Wednesday in Lisbon, the ladies beating Lithuania and Wales, the men overcoming Luxembourg.

Although the England men will face s tougher test when they take on Turkey on Thursday, they put in a professional display to open the championships.

After victories for Paul Drinkall and Liam Pitchford, Walker completed the overall win by seeing off Eric Glod in four, putting his foot down after his opponent had levelled at 1-1.

England’s men and former Valley student Walker are back on court at 10am on Thursday.

The women then finish their group campaign against Azerbaijan, before the men’s final group match against Finland.
