The Redlands pupil took part in the event’s fun run, and by a quirk of fate was finishing at the same time as the main race winner.

But it’s unlikely race veteran Spencer will begrudge the rousing ovation for the Gateford seven-year-old, who left his walking aid with dad Jonathan to complete the 3km race.

Speaking to the Guardian Bailey said he enjoyed the race, and the support of the crowd.

He’s a regular entrant in the Clumber Parkruns on Saturday mornings, but this was his first official timed race.

Proud mum Julie said: “He’s a very determined little boy. As far as he’s concerned there’s nothing he can’t do.”
