SHEFFIELD Steelers are Elite Ice Hockey League champions.

Ben Simon’s men travelled to Braehead Clan on Saturday, knowing that victory would leave them two points from a title.

They triumphed 5-1 in Scotland, with captain Jonathan Phillips scoring the first goal in the 19th minute.

Four more followed in the second period, Jeff Legue, Joey Talbot, Neil Clark and Ashley Tait all finding the net.

Braehead scored the only goal of the final session, Bobby Chaumount spoiling the Steelers’ shutout bid.

The two teams were back at Sheffield Arena on Sunday, and the result was never in doubt, Steelers hammering their visitors 7-2 to win the league.

Rod Sarich scored twice, as did Steve Munn, and Legue, Clark and Jerramie Domish rounded off the scoring.

A delighted Simon said: “I’m so proud of the team, every one of the guys deserves credit, everyone has done a fantastic job.”

Steelers are in play-off action this week, and won the first leg of their quarter-final clash with Dundee Stars 6-1, at home.

The second leg is on Saturday.
