Putting costs Westwood in Arizona

POOR putting cost Lee Westwood as he crashed out of the WGC Match Play Championship in Arizona.

Taking on America’s Nick Watney, the Worksop man was never ahead in the match and found himself two down after 13 holes.

Westwood took three putts at the 16th when he had an opportunity to square the tie, and after Watney squandered a chance to win it on 17, the pair halved the last and the world number one left the competition.

Speaking after his loss to Watney, the same golfer who put him out last year, Westwood said: “I putted very poorly all day long.

“The game’s in good shape but I have just not worked hard on my putting and it showed.”
