Poor start for basketball side

SHEFFIELD DIVISION TWO

Worksop A 40

Rotherham Hawks 56

WORKSOP turned in a poor performance to open the season and were comfortably beaten by the Hawks.

The A side matched the Hawks in the opening exchanges but a three-pointer going into the first break gave the young Rotherham outfit a 17-11 lead.

Hawks then opened the second period with two unanswered threes and the lead was quickly out to 12 points.

Worksop adjusted their defence and reduced the three-point threat, but Hawks were just as accurate from inside the arc and they stretched their lead to 34-18 by half-time.

Steve Lawes’ men struggled all night with fumbles, mis-placed passes and missed shots but they did managed to win the third period to go in to the final break at 33-48.

However, Worksop failed to make any further impression in the final period, with Hawks remaining in complete control as Worksop’s shooting woes continued.

A 6-0 run in the closing minutes at least helped Worksop avoid the embarrassment of registering one of their all-time low scores.

Coach Lawes said: “This will serve as real wake-up call to all of us.”

“We are going to have to be at our best every game if we are going to be competitive in this division.”

“There won’t be any easy games this season.”
