Huge Trent zander is caught by local ace

Local specimen ace Ian Wilson has landed yet another huge zander.

Ian has been targeting river Trent zander for several weeks and clocked up a good tally so far, topped off by his latest 12lb+ predator.

Big Zeds are very rare creatures.

I think the Trent record stands at around 17lb.

I’d like to think that Ian’s efforts will one day be rewarded with a new Trent record.

Zander are predominantly night feeders.

They have very large eyes and can see clearly in the dark giving them the advantage over their prey.

For best results target features such as structures, bays and slack water with legered roach live baits or freshly killed roach dead baits.

You will catch a surprising amount of pike at night too so make sure you use a 30lb wire trace, at least 18 inches long.

You are basically fishing with scaled-down pike rigs with size 8 or 10 trebles or size 6 single hooks.

Zander tend to hunt in packs, darting into shoals of roach, biting them and then later returning to pick them up and eat them so hit every little knock, you’ll hook far more fish.

Specialist tackle and traces for pike and zander can be ordered online at www.pikemaster.co.uk.
