Worksop Ladies Hockey Club’s second team celebrated their first win of the 2014/15 season on Saturday.
The ladies secured a 2-1 victory over visitors Newark, and they had to come from behind to do it.
A strike from the Newark right winger sneaked in at the near post to surprise everyone and open the scoring for the away side.
Worksop hit back within 10 minutes when a reverse stick pass from captain Annabelle Wilson from top D was slapped home by Amanda Young at the right post.
Worksop then took the lead when an attack down the right wing ended with a fantastic strike from midfielder Sarah Bagshaw.
In the second half, Worksop looked the most likely to score but unfortunately could not extend their lead to make the result safe.
Fiona Webb came closest but sliced her shot just wide of the post at a short corner.
Worksop remained disciplined in defence, didn’t overcommit to attacks and quickly quashed any danger from the Newark forwards to take maximum points.
Player of the Match was awarded to left midfield Lucy Wheatley who worked tirelessly for the team.
Worksop Ladies first team were defeated 3-0 by top of the league Southwell Brincliffe United.
Worksop worked hard to get something from the game but an outstanding performance from Southwell’s goalkeeper stopped Worksop getting anything over the goalline.
Player of the Match was shared by three players, namely Katie Hetherington, Rebecca Hetherington and Joanne Bochenski.
Saturday saw the third team draw 1-1 away at North Notts.
The game was a great battle and was a good warm up for this weekend’s grudge match against Beeston.
Becky Prudence provided the Worksop goal and Kathryn May was awarded Player of the Match.
Unfortunately the fourth team suffered another cancellation.
Although they picked up the three points, it will be scant consolation for a side just finding their form this season.
