Dinnington Rugby Union Under 11s’ inaugural tour to Leicester took place towards the end of March, with local kids remaining unbeaten.

Tour manager Sean Blackburn writes his account of the trip, from preparations to post-tour reflections.

“The under 11s inaugural tour to Leicester was undertaken over the weekend 22nd and 23rd March.”

“Preparations had been underway for some months, including a fund raising bag pack at Tesco, where the generosity of the community helped raise £805.97.”

“In addition local sports fanatic, Philip Shackley provided funding for tour hoodies and tour polo shirts, and parent, Matt Thomas, managing director of Green Dealer Ltd sponsored a tour t-shirt so players looked professional.”

“The tour party consisted of Sam Aspinal-Bilton, Josh Bergomi, James Blackburn, Josh Cannadine, James Davies, Oliver Davies, Josh Drake, Jack Hardwick-Jones, Jack Mills, Jack Palmer-Haywood, Henry Robinson, James Sanderson, Lewis Thomas, Harri Thorman, Harry Williams, Matt Woodward and William Boocock, and non playing member Cai Thomas.”

“Tourists departed Dinnington Rugby Club at 9am on Saturday for a journey to Derby for 10 pin bowling, after which we travelled to Barton under Needwood.”

“Strong ties are being fostered between the two clubs after the Barton side came to Dinnington last season.”

“The fixture comprised two games, the first kicking off in bright sunshine which finished 35-14 to Dinnington with tries from Matt Woodward (2), Harry Williams, Oliver Davies, Jack Palmer-Haywood.”

“Kicking duties were shared, James Blackburn converting three and James Davies two.”

“Unfortunately the weather deteriorated, but the conditions did nothing to dampen spirits resulting in a further 28-5 Dinnington victory.”

“Try scorers were Matt Woodward, James Sanderson, James Blackburn and Harry Williams.”

“Again kicking duties were shared with both Blackburn and Davies converting two.”

“Barton coaches singled out Josh Drake for a Man of the Match award after agreeing to play for their team following the injury to a Barton player.”

“Post match, the Barton coaches, players and parents challenged Dinnington to a tug of war, but lost.”

“In the Barton Club House the hospitality was second to none.”

“Following a stay in Corby, day two saw the Dinnington outfit arrive at Nuneaton Rugby Club. “

The first game concluded 15 -15, Harry Williams and Oliver Davies (2) scoring.”

“Game two saw another strong Dinnington performance ending 25-5 in our favour, and try scorers were Matt Woodward, James Blackburn and Oliver Davies (3).”

“Hospitality was provided, before the Dinnington party made their way to Welford Road, Leicester to see the Tigers beat Exeter Chiefs 45-15 .”

“Awards went to Harry Williams, Matt Woodward, James Blackburn, Jack Mills, Josh Cannadine and Harry Thorman, with Parents’ Player of the Tour won by Harry Williams, Player of the Tour going to Oliver Davies and Man of the Tour picked up by Matt Woodward.”

“Weary tourists returned home on Sunday to be greeted by parents eager for details, but...what goes on tour, stays on tour.”
