Angling: Match men need massive weights to take win

Matchmen have been enjoying some great sport this week with massive weights needed to secure wins across the region.

Ben Holmes bagged the biggest net of the week, weighing in at over 224lb during Sunday’s Open on Hallcroft’s Moat Pool.

Fishing from Island peg 42, Ben opted for pole paste tactics at 6m and 13m over hemp and pellet to land 27 carp to beat the 22-strong field.

Paul Elliott also broke the two-ton barrier during Friday’s Open on the Moat, weighing in over 217lb of carp.

Paul drew Outer peg 99 and put his bomb rod to the test, fishing hair-rigged corn to land carp to 15lb.

Craig Owen narrowly missed out on a two-ton net by only 10oz, again on the Moat, after landing 30 carp for a winning weight of 199lb 6oz.

Sherwood Forrest’s Holmedale Lake also threw up some huge weights of over 190lb to Martyn Brown and Nigel Shipman but these incredible weights only just scraped wins with anglers needing over a ton to get on the score card.

Many of the local waters can also throw up a few surprises, as Aaron Allen found when he hooked into a beautiful Golden Tench on a local Stillwater (pictured).

Young Aaron has also caught Sturgeon and huge eels from local commercials, which we’ll feature in future issues.

GamE SCENE

Toft Newton Reservoir: 51 Rods caught 91 trout giving a rod average of 1.78.

Fish remain high in the water and anglers fishing either the washing line with a small Blob Booby on the point and Nymphs on the droppers or teams of Dries have had the better results.

Ralph Gibson enjoyed some great boat sport on Tuesday, landing six fish.

Rod Newborough reported a fantastic sighting, an Osprey as it dived to take a fish in front of him.

It’s moments like this that add to our fishing memories.

It’s not always about how many fish you catch.

The unsettled, cooler weather could lead to improved catches over the week ahead.

Boats are free on Tuesdays but must be pre-booked quoting reference FBT.
