Westwood's US Open challenge falters

DESPITE a bright start to his third round, Lee Westwood's challenge at the US Open faded in New York.

With the tournament having to be completed tomorrow (Monday) due to torrential rain affecting the early rounds, Westwood started the third round today (Sunday) in contention.

A two over par first round of 72 was a solid start for the Worksop golfer, given the conditions.

His second round score of 66 put him back in with a shot at his first major win, and his third began well today as he picked up two shots to go four under for the tournament after four holes.

But bogeys at five, seven, eight and 10 saw him drop back, with only a birdie at the ninth to give him hope.

He dropped two more shots at the 14th and one at the 15th but finished with three consecutive pars and a round of 74.

He enters the final round two over for the tournament, 11 shots behind leader Ricky Barnes, who is currently playing the 15th at Bethpage Black.
