Ward the whizz

CLOWNE ROAD Runner Andy Ward is rolling back the years and running like 'Billy Whizz.'

The 39-year-old has had a string of wins in the last month and is hoping the England selectors are taking note.

Ward finished first, ahead of 1,000 other runners, at the Chatsworth 10km race, in a time of 34.23.

He then went to the Sinfin 10km near Derby and crossed the finish line at 31.55, in first place.

To complete his hat-trick he won the Long Eaton 5-miler, in a blistering time of 24.43.

Not content with three wins in a month, he put on his Worksop Harriers vest and won the first and third races in the Nottingham Road Race League, and now leads the series.

On Sunday 21st June he made it five out of five at the British Masters 5km Championships at Horwich.

Ward ran in the 35/39 catergory and won the race in a time of 15.11, taking the title of British Champion.

He told the Guardian his success was down to hard work.

"I train very hard, but my training is specific and sustainable, so I don't get injured," he said.

"I have a consistency in training that translates well to races."

Denis Learad, of Clowne Road Runners, believes Ward has a real chance of representing his country.

He said: "The win at the British Masters does not give him automatic selection for England, but it won't do him any harm."

"Andy will now need to try and qualify for the Home Nations Masters cross country in the winter, which takes place in Birmingham."

Teammates Lewis Banton and Mel Adams have also been doing the Clowne club proud.

Banton recently won the prestigious Swaledale Marathon in 3:15:00, some nine minutes in front of the second place runner.

This added to his win earlier in the year at the 9.5-mile Blakey Blitz.

Meanwhile Adams, who only started running a year ago, came in first in the V35's category at The Elmton Chase.
