Triathlete Bishop powers to Cuckney win

WORKSOP'S rookie triathlete Andy Bishop continues to go from strength to strength in the sport.

Just a year after starting, he has again proved his credentials by winning the recent Cuckney 10-mile time trial series.

The event consisted of 12 cycle races over 18 weeks, with results based on a points system.

And Bishop revealed that the support of his friends and family helped see him through to victory.

"In my 12th and final race, my family and friends turned out to watch me win the race to seal overall victory and become Rider Of The Season, out of 78 riders," he said.

And the Cuckney event is just the latest event in which the 30-year-old has made an impact.

"Recently I raced in the National Relays Triathlon Competition at Holme Pierrepoint, Nottingham, representing the Sheffield Triathlon Team," he said.

"I managed to stand out from the crowd on the cycle section by individually finishing 17th out of nearly 2,000 competitors."

"My team finished 51st out of 500 teams overall."

"My fastest time on the cycle over 10 miles is 20 minutes and 55 seconds which is an average speed of 29mph."

The Smiths Flour Mill employee joined Sheffield Triathlon Club after his wife encouraged him to buy a new bike and treated him to a unique sporting experience.

He said: "My wife Claire bought me a session at the velodrome in Manchester. That was amazing and I did quite well on the track."

"I had an old bike that I'd built up really cheaply and I came 20th in a triathlon on it."

"I had a motorbike that my wife suggested I sell and get a time trial bike, and from then on I've been doing really well."

And the amiable Worksop man says that he may focus more particularly on the cycling discipline over the next year.

"I have still got more triathlons but next season I am going to focus a lot more on the bike, with a 97 mile raced called The Tour Of The Peaks coming up in a few weeks.," he revealed.

"I am really enjoying training and competing and feel I am constantly improving. I am looking forward to seeing where it will all lead."
