Tigers cruise to derby win
WORKSOP Town cruised to a Bassetlaw derby victory today at Cannon Park.
Retford United 0-3 Worksop Town (full-time)
Worksop Town made one change from the side who lost to Marine on Saturday, James Colliver coming in at right-back to replace the unavailable Scott Wharton.
The first chance of the game fell to Matt Booth after a quiet opening six minutes, the Retford striker putting the ball over the top after charging down a Luke Shiels clearance.
Jack Stephenson blasted well over for the hosts on 11, Tigers failing to close him down in the middle of the park.
Worksop fans had to wait a quarter of an hour before their side had a shot on goal. The ball came out to Chris Bettney on the edge of the box, and he drove it wide.
But two minutes later the former Badger opened the scoring for Worksop with a spectacular effort. Mark Camm sent the ball out wide, Bettney ran at the defence, cut inside and curled a beautiful shot over Richard Jeffries and into the net.
Booth limped out of the game seconds later, Jake Vernon taking his place up front for Retford.
Ryan Hindley smacked a free-kick at goal for the home side, but it didn't quite dip enough to trouble Jon Kennedy.
With a minute left in the half Worksop doubled their lead. Hindley gave away a free-kick on the left, was shown a yellow, and Tigers pumped the ball into the box, where it was headed into his own net by Dan White.
In what is becoming a tradmark restart for Worksop, Jamie Jackson went on a jinking run from the kick-off, and drew a foul deep inside the Retford half, but the set-piece came to nothing.
Jackson was in the action again five minutes into the half, winning another free-kick levevl with the six-yard box on the right, although Badgers were able to clear.
A brilliant one-two between Peter Knox and Jackson almost allowed the latter to slip through the Retford defence, but a well-timed tackle denied him.
The game had no real malice or edge, but was fragmented by a number of niggly fouls, and a stagnant spell was only livened up by a Nicky Ellis half-volley that cleared the Worksop bar by several feet.
A Bettney corner brought a cheeky flick from Deon Meikle, but the effort was well wide.
The rangy midfielder then pinged a low left-foot shot on target, Jeffries getting down late to save.
Steve Owens, Retford's best player by some way, screwed a shot wide on 72.
It was 3-0 on 76 minutes, Bettney scoring again - this time with an inch perfect back post volley, crashing Ryan Mallon's cross into the far corner of the net.
Jackson made way for Lee Whittington with 10 minutes left, during a break in play caused by injury to Hindley.
The Retford winger was replaced by Keiron Davies, and five minutes later his Worksop counterpart also left the fray, Danny Simpson coming on.
