Rob Dowd says a one-game-at-a-time philosophy can drive Sheffield Steelers to the Elite League title.

The club is desperate to hang on to their table-topping position with four games remaining. And the thrill of achieving a second-straight championship is evident in the dressing room, as they prepare for weekend games against Nottingham Panthers and Coventry Blaze.

“The guys are feeling pretty excited, it is great to have this opportunity at the crunch time of the season” he says. “But we are not going to get too far ahead of ourselves. We just look and plan for the next game and go for the points.

“Nottingham is a big game, but we have to approach it like all the others. We will work with a game plan in mind and try to be the best all over the ice.”

Dowd returned to the team last weekend after a leg injury which has yet to fully heal.

His score Sheffield’s fourth goal in a 5-2 win over Fife Flyers, a game which Levi Nelson executed twice in front of goal.

“There hasn’t been any problems with the knee. It went really well during the game and I have practices since. Wearing the supporting brace reduces the risk of re-injuring it. I’m not 100 per cent but it’s going pretty steady.”

Steelers have pointed out that Nelson’s improved form had coincided with Dowd’s return. But the Teessider said: “I cannot take credit for others playing well! It was nice to be back and it is great to have such a chemistry with Vesty (Fredrik Vestberg) and Levi.”

The GB winger added: “I don’t know why this sort of chemistry happens, you just click with some players. We always seem to know where we are going to be on the ice.”

*Steelers’ title chase was done the world of good last night when Coventry Blaze hammered Nottingham Panthers 6-1.
