Rob gets the fundraising off the ground for Tigers
ROB Waite has a roving eye when it comes to football.
For a full report on this and all the latest local news, sport and leisure, make sure you get your copy of the Worksop Guardian - now on sale on Thursday afternoon.
The practice of ‘groundhopping’ involves travelling around the country’s football stadiums to take in the beautiful game in a wide variety of environments.
Rob is hoping that his footballing travels can aid the Tigers in their current financial plight.
He told the Guardian: “It started as an harmless remark in the social club at Durham City recently.”
“Somebody asked how many games I’d been to this season while we were discussing ways of raising money for the Tigers.”
“A suggestion was made that people could sponsor me if I reach a set number of games this season.”
Fellow Tigers fans set Rob the heady target of 75 games, something he believes is achievable for a worthwhile cause.
“I already sponsor Worksop Town in my own small way, but there is a limit as to what I can afford.”
“But people offering to put up money for the club while I indulge my own sad anorak hobby a few times a week, work permitting, means they’ll have a bit extra coming in.”
“Some people collect train numbers, others travel to catch fish, people collect daft things and others spend thousands of pounds and hour after hour playing with their cars.”
“Me, I go to loads of football matches.”
The Retford man began to support Tigers – along with his other football loves – in the mid 80s, although he didn’t originally intend to become a fan.
He said: “After Retford Town went bust in the mid 80s, Worksop Town were the nearest local side so I used to get the bus over to Central Avenue to scratch my Non League itch there, just to watch as a neutral .”
“But it never worked out that way did it?”
“I’m not a monogamous fan, I do get my ‘pleasure’ elsewhere too.”
“There are loads of different shapes, sizes and tastes to try out.”
“Hearts and Mansfield Town aren’t without their appeals.”
“And in the 1970s Arsenal had star quality players like Terry Mancini and Jeff Blockley, which was bound to turn any impressionable young lad’s head a bit, but I got over that.”
The 46-year-old singnalling and telecoms technician has already had pledges of cash from Tigers fans, and supporters of other clubs and is appealing for the people of Worksop to help the Tigers out.
“One day, who knows when, hopefully sooner rather than later, they’ll be back playing in Worksop, but right now with the added burden of struggling in exile they need everybody who possibly can to help in their own small way,” he said.
lANYONE who wants to sponsor Rob’s 75-match quest this season can visit the ‘Tigers in Exile’ internet forum or email sport@worksop-guardian.co.uk
The money will be collected once he reaches his target.
