Olympic hopeful's season ends early

WORKSOP Olympic hopeful Tesni Ward has had her season ended prematurely by injury.

The teenage athletics star was having a successful 2010, with victory in the discus at the UK Championships, and silver medals in both shot and javelin.

But a shoulder injury has brought a halt to her progress, and dashed her hopes for a grandstand finish to the season.

Speaking to the Guardian this week she said: "Unfortunately I have picked up a slight shoulder inpingement, meaning that I've had to end my season early, which pretty much ruined my plans."

"I have to miss a competition that had cash prizes, one I've been working all year for by collecting points from other competitions."

"I had hoped to qualify for the Commonwealth games, but this injury came along at the time when I really needed to perform."

But the youngster, who is ranked first in the UK for Under 20 in discus, and second in both javelin and shot, is staying positive.

She said: "I'm happy in a way."

"Because I do three throwing events my arm gets a battering every season, and it needs rest."

"So I can concentrate on other things, I've started running and working on my legs and core."

"When I can go back to using my arm I will start my winter training, which hopefully will be more successful than last year, which was hampered by injury and illness."

And the Post-16 Centre pupil has another reason to remain upbeat.

"I've got into my first choice university, Sheffield Hallam, which I'm really happy about," she said.

"In September I'll be going to study biomedical sciences."

As well as getting used to life as a student, Ward plans to evaluate her chances of making the 2012 Olympics.

She told the Guardian: "This winter's training will help me decide how high my chances are of possibly getting there."

"My training age is still very young compared to the other people I compete against, as I've only had a coach for two years, which means there is alot of catch up to be done."

She's hoping that her hard work and the right coaching strategy will bring rewards in 2011.

"I have sat down with my coach recently and planned out my angle of attack for this year's training, and I'm confident that next year big improvements will be seen, just due to my increases in fitness," she added.
