Brand new courts for squash club

WORKSOP Squash Club no longer want to be one of the town's best kept secrets.

A refurbishment has provided the club with two brand new courts, a gym and top class changing facilities, at the Worksop Cricket Club venue on Central Avenue, and competition secretary Phil Owen wants local people to know about it.

He told the Guardian: "Our brand new courts opened on Monday and we're hoping to raise awareness in the town, so that people know what great facilities they have on their doorstep."

"Our courts were damaged in last year's floods when the water came in under and tore the plaster away, but the refurbishment has given us almost a brand new complex with a gym, ladies and gents' changing rooms and upgraded showers."

Phil says the club's members have been delighted with the new facilities and hopes that the club's numbers will swell.

He said: "The reaction has been extremely good, people have said how nice it is to play on the new courts and how bright they are."

"There used to be many local players until the courts at the old leisure centre closed down, but people just don't know that there are courts in Worksop they can play on."

"Ours are the only courts in Worksop where you can play squash and racketball and whilst the membership numbers are quite small, the cost is minimal."

A year's membership at Worksop Squash Club costs 95, which includes use of the gym and bar facilities, and a 40-minute session on the brand new courts comes at the price of 3.

The club has a number of internal leagues, as well as teams competing in the Sheffield and District League, and Phil believes the club can accomodate everyone, from beginners to serious players.

"We have leagues for all abilities, we can cater for novices, medium and experienced players. And with the racketball, we're providing a facility for the older generation."

"Racketball is not as hard or intense as squash but is still a great workout and you can play the sport up to a good age and remain fit. The age group of our racketball players is probably 50 to around 70."

Squash is reknowned as a high-impact sport that has great benefits for players' health and Worksop Squash Club are hoping people will be willing to try an unfamiliar sport to get their health kick.

Phil said: "It's a very healthy game, it gives you a great burst of energy and burns lots of calories. There aren't that many players locally, but once word gets around that the courts are accessible, perhaps numbers will increase."
